Evaluation Question 7

When I think back to what I didn't know about camera angles, lighting, sound mise en scene and editing, I feel that now I have come along way from making my preliminary task to now completing my thriller opening. I understand that camera angles give the audience a sense of importance when it comes to characters, and that it makes a difference on the viewer when watching, which camera angles are being used, the viewer doesn't even notice that the camera angle is changing sometimes because of the well thought out match on action, done by editing.

I can now understand that editing is something that can manipulate the reader into thinking something out of nothing, or perseving a character in a way that they want the character to be seen as. Editing can take a long time to put together, because it has to make sense and have the rule of continuity.

I've realised that the lighting of a film contributes greatly to the mise en scene, and that it has an effect on the viewer, to show time of day, bad mood, bad scene taking place, good moods, good things happening, the type of character, and what is happening.

Learning new vocabulary during the beginning of my media A level, has let me understand clearly the type of sounds that are used in scenes, such as digetic and non-digetic.

If i hadn't done my preliminary task, I feel I would have struggled even more on the editing part, because it gave me the feel of using the Final Cut Express, or After Effects to put my film together. I am glad that I completed both of my tasks successfully, and I am very happy with my thriller opening.

Evaluation Question 2

I couldn't find a thriller film where my characters were similar to any other characters in a thriller film. But I am able to state differences.

My character (on the left) is devious, vindictive, manipulative, a liar, pretty and well dressed. In my film, the women is represented as a strong personality and dishonest personality. she is able to get what she wants.

In the thriller 'Taken' a main character which is a daughter of the man (on the right). She is represented as a teenager, who is vulnerable, silly, dependant, weak, fun, sweet and kind. She has a family that cares for her, and friends she loves.

Evaluation Question 1, Part 1

1. This is a shot of the knife that was used in my opening sequence. A knife is definitely a part of thriller convention. It can be used to kill, scare, or warn a character or even the audience.

2. In thrillers, titles often appear inbetween the scenes, this is what I have also done, and I have purposefully used a red font on a black background, for more of a thriller effect.

3. Thillers can be watched for the purpose if simply the actors used in the film. Me stating who will be starring in my film would draw the audience, because they will be anxious to see who will be in it.

4. In my opening, I have a women getting ready,and suddenly they're struggling feet which have been tied. In thrillers they generally are hesitant to show the full character at the beginning, and often don't make sense as to why things are happening, this is what I have portrayed.

5. This is a shot of my character getting ready, using distinctive red lipstick. In thrillers usually there are characters that can be spotted by certain features. I have also used this technique.

6. Packing a bag could make the audience question what the character is packing it for, or why. In thriller openings, questions from the audience do not get answered, this should make my audience want to carry on watching to find out.

7. The audience are able to see more of the character, this could make them excited, but they realise that the face is not shown. Thrillers often tease the audience like that.

8. At the end, an action takes place with both characters, but is short lived when the scene changes. This could tease the audience again.

9. My opening ends with the title, which sounds like a thriller.

Evaluation Question 1, Part 2

1. This opening begins with the production logo that was part of the film. Maybe this production logo is best known for their thrillers.

2. The title look like it has been written in blood, which is a good thing because thrillers usually have blood as a big part of their film.

3. A close up in thrillers are very effective because they can be very deceiving to the viewer. Just like in this scene, it looks like something really bad is happening, when actually the character is just shaving. But the audience also knows that the scene has been portrayed this way purposefully.

4. Having a knife in a thriller is a massive give-away that the film is actually a thriller, and could be an essential prop. In this scene the knife is cutting through something which looks like flesh, but once again it is deceiving the characters because it is not flesh, it is only food.

5. In this shot, it looks very 'thriller like' because if the knife, and what looks like blood.

6&7. These shots make the viewer feel a little scared, which is what the film is trying to do. , the close up camera angle is making the viewers think something else out of something innocent.

8. This shot looks like the character is being suffocated by a white material, which is part of the thriller genre and conventions because it is a way of killing. But again, this whole opening is about deceiving the characters into thinking something else, but secretly it is showing the characters that this film is a thriller.

9. At the end, the character stares nastily into the camera, and this could show some personality of the character.

Diary

Overall, I did enjoy making my thriller film, and it has given me the chance to use different technologies. I am very happy with my opening, and after everything that made it a struggle to accomplish, I think it made me want to be able to do it even more., and I am very thankful for given the chance.

I had received feedback after posting my opening on the social networking website, Facebook, I feel this was the best way for anyone to have the chance to be able to comment.

Student Film Reasearch: THE VICTIM - Final Task - YR12 Media

I like that this opening sequence is in black and white, it definitely adds to the thriller genre. Good editing skills have been applied and match on action. The way the titles come up are a good way because it comes between the scenes, I think this is very creative. A good location was picked out. A weakness that I would point out is that I wasn't exactly getting the plot towards the end, and I had to rewind it and watch it again, it then made sense to me.

Student Film Research: Group 4 - Remembrance

This opening sequence definitely has a good storyline and a great location. I like the way the titles are entering and the production logo, how it was at the beginning. I like the transitions used to go from scene to scene, it definitely adds to the thriller genre. I appreciated the dialogue that was used because it gave me some background information about the character, and it would let me the audience understand him a lot more. The music used fit the scenes and I think it ended very well. The camera angles were good, and fit the type of scene. If i had to say something bad about this, would be that towards the end, the jump cuts were a bit fast as he was walking in the hallway. I loved this opening sequence.

Student Film Reasearch: 'The Neighbour' AS media thriller, opening to a film

This opening sequence has a great storyline, and I actually feel I want to watch the film. I think this is the main objective, to be able to make your target audience want to watch the film,and this is what it does for me. I like how the background music comes in later on to build up suspense. Good camera angles are used to show the important parts of a scene. To say something that is a weakness is that this opening sequence lasts a long time, although it does keep the audience interested.

Preliminary Task

The first thing that me and my partner filmed for our coursework was to successfully complete a preliminary task. This included acting with somebody else and filming an interview which went on for around 2 minutes. It had to include the '180 degree rule', match on action and shot reverse shot.

To ensure continuity, there are rules. The '180 degree rule' is when the camera stays on one side of the line throughout the entire film. it allows the viewers to know which characters on on the left and which are on the right. Going over the line would mean that the viewer would become confused and it makes the film look unrealistic.

The shot reverse shot is to engage the audience of making the conversation seem real, and lets the viewer see facial expressions and take it in turns to see each character when they are speaking or doing something important for the viewers to see, without any thing unimportant being in the way.

Panning would mean the camera is continually following the character, and the viewer can clearly see the camera is moving. Match on action means having a continuity factor of a scene making sense whilst changing from scene to scene.

Me and my partner made sure we had each of these factors in our film, to ensure a pass.

Filming

Today I had a new camera, and some new shots were taken for my opening., because I had to re-film because my shots were incomplete. I thought they were really cool. I also finally thought up a suitable title finally.

Re-shooting

I have just re-shot some scenes, and I couldn't get hold of my original characters, so I had an alternative, because I wasn't going got let that hold me back. I had to use my initiative and use somebody else to step in. I think it worked.

Filming

I had to re-shoot some of my scenes, so I did a few shots on Thursday 25th and I will do a few more today 28th November to bring it to an end. The reason I re-shot was because when I had feedback, I was told my scenes were too dark and that I should put a lot more light in the shots. I took this feedback and amended my opening sequence.

This production logo has been around for a very long time and I seem to see it a lot. I like the range of colours used and the background music, I think it is appropriate. I am sure they are a well respected in the industry and make a lot of money.

Universal has a great background music and it fit with the mise-on-scene. I like the lighting used and the camera angles are very effective.

I remember watching a Disney film when I was younger, and I liked this production company logo. I liked the lighting and the colours. This production company logo has been around for a long time.

Audience and Location

The location that I have decided to do my film opening in is my house. I think this would be suitable because I can use it when ever I please, and I can use it in which ever way I want. I also feel I would be most comfortable at home.

My film opening will be for 18 and overs because I feel like the storyline wouldn't be suitable for any age younger than that. So it will be appealing to older teenagers and those in their early 20's. I think this age group would find the film more entertaining than people of an older age, because the main character is a young women. People of a young age, I think would be the ones to watch horror films more.

My film opening will give off that the main character is the bad one and this may engage the audience to want to carry on watching. I think the gender that it would attract is both male and female, because both genders would be able to relate to this film, and hopefully find it interesting.

Dexter Opening Sequence

The opening sequence starts off with a close up camera angle, which makes the viewer see the image in detail, the camera then zooms out. Afterwards the title appears, as if it is written in blood. The music in the background changes when the titles appear, and the light darkens over the letters, it makes it seem like a shadow.

Next there is an over the shoulder camera angle, which puts the viewer in a position where they would feel like they are behind him, and the camera also blurs out the mans image, like he is in disguise.

Extreme close ups in this opening sequence, make the viewer think something else is taking place, when actually something ordinary is happening, this could make the viewer feel anxious.

Ideas that give off that the film will be a thriller is because things such as dripping blood from the neck area, showing a bloody tissue, showing a knife cutting through something that looks like flesh, when the cutting of egg with dropping blood was edited to quick fast looks, this would make the viewer keep watching.

When tying string around his fingers, it felt as if he was going to do something dangerous, because it was an extreme close-up, the viewer wasn't able at first, to see the full extent of the action taking place, which made the viewer question what was happening. This has the same effect on the viewer when the laces were being tightened to the mans fingers.

When he is pulling his t-shirt over his fae, it seems like he is being suffocated when actually he is just ordinarily putting on his t-shirt. The camera angle also causes us to believe so, because it is a close-up shotm and doesn't show the surroundings, so the viewers do not know the whole picture.

Towards the end, the scene has changed and the title is also repeated.

The opening sequence shows that is a thriller because all the close ups show ways that cause killings, and thrillers would have murders in the film.

Case Study on Michael Mann

Michael Mann is a director ho was born on the 5th February 1943. He is originally from America. He is also a screen writer and producer. He moved to London to live and went the film school. In total he spent 7years in the UK. He then directed a documentary '17 Days Down The Line'. He was responsible for writing the first four epiosodes of 'Starsky and Hutch' and then an episode for 'Vegas'. All whilst he was playing a part on the programme 'Police Story'.

The first film that he featured in was called 'The Jericho Mile'. Second was 'The Keep' He was best known for his own style which reflected in his work.

Seven Opening Sequence

Starts off with an exteme close-up, and music that builds up suspence. The way the names appear is creative, and the handwriting used is appropiate.

It shows a character doing unusual things to himself. This could make the viewer question why. It then shows the character writng inside a book that could be a journal. This could easily make the viewer question what is being written down. Images of people being abused is also being placed inside the book. This could give an idea about the character being a murderer and keeping a record about the killings.

The opening sequence does introduce a sense of the theme. This could make the audience feel like they can guess the film story line.

I think the sounds in the background are suitable for the theme, and the actions that is going on.

The editing of the opening sequence was done well because at times it makes the image become double which is special effects. The sound makes the viewer feel as if the are being builed up to something. This builds up suspense, which could get the audience excited, and carry on watching.

The opening titles are displayed in a way that has been edited. Almost as if it is flashing. I think that is cool.

Vertigo Opening Sequence

In this opening sequence, it begins off with a sound track, also with and extreme close-up, with every dark lighting. The same sound is used throughout the whole opening sequence.

The way the names appear is very basic and a few animations is used.

The background is very basic and boring. I don't think it gives anything about the film away, and in some cases this is a good thing.

The may interest the audience because it doesn't give too much information away, which may keep the audience locked on, or it could make the viewer bored.

I dont think this opening sequence gives away any clues, as to what could happen in the film, or any characters personalities.
